Steps I'd take to improve my photography...
-
Step 1:
Learn Composition.
These techniques are the foundations of your photo.
Understand: Framing, Leading Lines, Rule of Thirds, Negative Space, Symmetry.
Get creative, Experiment with different styles.
-
Step 2:
Just Practice.
Photography isn't something you can nail first time. Your work will not look like the photographers you admire just yet.
To get better, It's simple - Practice
Learn new skills, get comfortable with settings, try new techniques and angles and you will constantly improve.
-
Step 3:
Editing.
Where the magic happens. The hardest part of photography.
Shoot in RAW.
Invest in Lightroom and Photoshop.
Buy your favourite creators presets as a starting point not a finish line. Learn how they edit, breakdown the settings and understand how they got the final look.
In my opinion: When it comes to editing, Less is more. You will build your own style over time.
-
Step 4:
Don't let Social Media define your work. Followers, likes, comments - They are just numbers. Not a measure of how good your work is.
Post everything you take. Build your portfolio.
Some of my work I'm most proud of didn't perform well online.
-
Step 5:
Connect With People.
It's not what you know, It's who you know.
Go to events, dealerships, trackways, car meets - Meet like minded people, share your passion, build your confidence.
Getting your first paid shoot:
Speak to car owners at events. Show them your work, tell them you would love to shoot their car at a location you have in mind. Be one step ahead.
-
Step 6:
Set yourself goals.
For example:
- Consistently build portfolio
- 3 Private shoots every month
- Start making money, re invest in camera gear
Work on yourself and your skills.
Watch yourself improve each month.
